Read “The Wizard of Oz: Parable on Populism” For Friday.  You will be having a quiz over the article on Friday.  Here are questions you should be able to answer:


A. Summarize Frank Baum’s background. What factors influenced his writing of The Wizard of Oz ?
B. Littleton writes of The Wizard of Oz as “Baum’s immortal American fantasy” that has “symbolic allegory implicit within its storyline and characterizations.” Be able to explain the symbols Baum uses in the Wizard of Oz, according to Littleton.
C. Littlefield argues that through his story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum provides a gentle and friendly Midwestern critique” of Populism. According to Littlefield, what is Baum’s critique?
D. Overall, what is Littlefield’s purpose in writing the article?
E. Think critically about Littlefield’s thesis. Is it correct? What problems might there be with it?
